Good product, but packaging isn’t ideal
Came on time. The seeds are the right size for my parrotlet, and I like that mix is formulated specifically for my bird’s species. The packaging could use some work. If you try to pour it, the seeds go everywhere since the resealing mechanism is inset from the sides a bit. So, you have to scoop it out of the bag. I would prefer that it is pourable, either with a more practical resealing mechanism or in a bottle. I transferred the seeds to an empty plastic orange juice jug.

Our young parrotlet just LOVES this mix of seeds and dried fruit. I bought it after trying a number of other foods for “smaller birds” and it’s truly superior. This mix is a heartier blend than what you find for parakeets, but not as robust as for larger parrots and other birds. Just right for a parrotlet. I’ll definitely be buying more of this product!

Best for our parrotlet
This is the favorite seed of our parrotlet. She loves it and really insists on this seed and nothing else. Of course, she likes her fresh treats, but this is her mainstay. I keep it in the freezer until I’m ready to use it to ensure freshness and deter any moth growth. I’ve never had any problems with it.

Bought this for my boys (2 tiels and a green-cheek) because I was not happy with the quality of feed at out local store. This is MUCH better in appearance and nutritional value. It is a great supplement to their daily fruit/vegetable/bean mash, and I see very little at the bottom of the cage.

My parrotlet loves his food! I love that is has a large variety of seeds, dried fruits and vegetables 🙂 I keep a small container of the seed under his cage in a sealed plastic container and store the remaining in the freezer to keep it fresh. I feed him 1 Tbsp a day along with a variety of other foods and this bag lasted us 6 months before ordering another.

To begin, this is one of the only mixes available specifically for parrotlets. Parrotlets can be horribly picky, wasteful eaters, meaning this may be a rather expensive venture into husbandry for such a relatively small amount of feed [4 lb].Parrotlets are unique among hookbills as veterinary discussion and avicultural observation has found that it may be extremely harmful to feed pellets to color mutations of the popular Pacific parrotlet. It is necessary to feed this mix with fresh vegetables and fruit provided because the very small amount of dried vegetables in this mix is not enough for a parrot to be healthy. Often birds will reject fresh food in exchange for seed like that contained in this diet; we call them seed junkies. If your bird exhibits such behavior, it may be necessary to leave safe fruits or vegetables in the dish for several hours in the morning before they spoil and then give the animal this seed mix. It can prove necessary to do this daily for weeks or months until the bird becomes accustomed to and accepting of fresh foods, even if it does take a year for them to finally eat them in addition to this seed mix. An additional tip is to sprout some of these (undamaged, whole) seeds in a bag with moist paper towels after soaking overnight; if they germinate successfully it means the seed is fresh, and mold-free sprouts may be washed in cold water and fed safely to birds as an extremely healthy dietary supplement.The stated daily serving size on the package is one tablespoon for small birds or 1/8 of a cup for small parrots, which I support. Parrotlets eat seed by husking it and most often discard the husks in the dish, in the process covering uneaten food. By placing a small amount in the bowl less is lost among the husks and less food is also wasted if the parrotlet is a picky eater. It will also stop birds from becoming overweight, which poses a risk to organ health if they consume too much seed or eat only the seeds in this diet with the highest fat content.Instructions on the package recommend refrigeration after opening in order to preserve the diet.I would not add any additional high fat foods to this diet, such as sunflower seeds. The ingredient list as provided on the package is as follows:Safflower seed, white proso millet, buckwheat, cracked corn, paddy rice, oat groats, canary grass seed, sunflower chips, black oil sunflower, peanuts, orange oat groats (FD&C Orange #6), hemp seed, kibbled corn, cantaloupe seed, carrot dices, dehydrated green peas, red bell pepper dices, peppers, spinach flakes, soybean oil, orange oil (used as a preservative).The product has a few drawbacks, such as no indication of where the ingredients originate or whether the ingredients were farmed organically and responsibly. The product, like fresh foods, should be organic as it is extra healthful for the body systems of birds. It would be beneficial to reduce the size of the peanuts and further reduce the cracked corn as most parrotlets are unwilling to break these foods into smaller pieces and oftentimes are unable to do so.

I love that I can buy a mix specifically for my parrotlet. There is some seeds he does not seem to like and I wish it had a few more hot peppers since he loves those. It has dried fruits and veggies, overall you cant go wrong with this mix.

All of my parrots love this brand. I have a parrotlet, conure and quaker. It has always been fresh and consistent. Better than most stuff in the pet store
Overall, this is great food. We used to get Kaytee Chunky, which my 8-month old parrotlet liked, but they stopped making it. We tried about four seed mixes that are in the pet stores and he didn’t really like them, so I tried The Volkman Parrotlet food. I’m pretty sure this is his favorite – I think he likes it even better than Kaytee Chunky. My parrotlet loves the safflower seeds – he used to pick through the old mix until those were all gone. I wish there were a few more sunflower seeds; he loves those too, so I supplement with extra sunflower seeds. The dried peas and yellow pellet things are both too hard for him to bite into, so those always end up on the floor of his cage. The dried fruit/veggies are also a bit hard, I usually break them up into tiny pieces so that he can at least attempt to eat them. Since I also give him fresh fruits and veggies daily, I’m not worried if he doesn’t eat the dry ones. He definitely likes this food better than any that are in the pet store now, and I highly recommend it. The only reason it doesn’t get a “five-star” is because the dried foods are so hard, and I have to add sunflower seeds.

My pet store “guy”, who knows his stuff, said to start my young parrotlet on parakeet seed & then move him over to cockatiel mix, which he supplied me with. I thought the seeds in it were really geared to a bigger bird diet than my little parrotlet, so I purchased this blend. He LOVES it, and is eagerly eating his seeds now (he was relying more on the extras I give him). He especially loves the safflower seeds, and even eats the dried greens in the mix, not something I’ve found my other birds (parakeets) to do in other blends.

We feed our two parrotlets the Volkman mixed with a pellet. It’s not a great idea to feed your parrotlets (or any bird, really) a 100% seed diet, but I know from experience that some smaller birds are SUPER PICKY and will NOT eat pellets. So if you are having to supplement your bird’s diet with some seed, this is a good one to do that with. We often mix it with Goldenfeast blends and the parrotlets *love* it.

I think this is a very good parrolet food but I wish it were without sunflower seeds. The vet at NC state school said that too high fat and protein are not good for a parrot. She could seed some black scalloping underneath my p’lets tail. I never knew that before.

My parrotlet is a very picky eater. He won’t eat most of the fresh fruits that I’ve seen other parrotlets go nuts over. I had been feeding him some expensive pellets recommended from the breeder I got him from, but he didn’t eat much of it and would rather eat treats instead. I was worried he wasn’t getting the nutrition he needs. I couldn’t find any bird food specialized for parrotlets in stores, but I’m so glad I found this food. He goes crazy over this food when he eats and lets out many very happy chirps when I feed him. I’ve been feeding him this food for awhile and he looks very vibrant and healthy. I’ll be keeping him on this brand for now on.

Pretty Wastful blend
I have one parrottlet and he just eats the seeds but leaves the white kernals. I blend it with a small bird pellet and seed mixture now cause he was doing poorly on this diet and just eating the australian blend of fruits and nuts. He is with two finch brothers in a big cage. I started giving him half this mixture with half premium parakeet mixture and he comes right down and busily inspects his cups. He wasnt moulting he just wasnt getting the nutrition he needed from this particular blend. He was raised on cockatiel food from breeder. I did slowly transition to this but it hasnt worked well.

Parrotlets can be horribly picky, wasteful eaters, meaning this may be a rather expensive venture into husbandry for such a relatively small amount of feed [4 lb].Parrotlets are unique among hookbills as veterinary discussion and avicultural observation has found that it may be extremely harmful to feed pellets to color mutations of the popular Pacific parrotlet. It is necessary to feed this mix with fresh vegetables and fruit provided because the very small amount of dried vegetables in this mix is not enough for a parrot to be healthy. Often birds will reject fresh food in exchange for seed like that contained in this diet; we call them seed junkies. If your bird exhibits such behavior, it may be necessary to leave safe fruits or vegetables in the dish for several hours in the morning before they spoil and then give the animal this seed mix. It can prove necessary to do this daily for weeks or months until the bird becomes accustomed to and accepting of fresh foods, even if it does take a year for them to finally eat them in addition to this seed mix. An additional tip is to sprout some of these (undamaged, whole) seeds in a bag with moist paper towels after soaking overnight; if they germinate successfully it means the seed is fresh, and mold-free sprouts may be washed in cold water and fed safely to birds as an extremely healthy dietary supplement.The stated daily serving size on the package is one tablespoon for small birds or 1/8 of a cup for small parrots, which I support. Parrotlets eat seed by husking it and most often discard the husks in the dish, in the process covering uneaten food. By placing a small amount in the bowl less is lost among the husks and less food is also wasted if the parrotlet is a picky eater. It will also stop birds from becoming overweight, which poses a risk to organ health if they consume too much seed or eat only the seeds in this diet with the highest fat content.Instructions on the package recommend refrigeration after opening in order to preserve the diet.I would not add any additional high fat foods to this diet, such as sunflower seeds. The ingredient list as provided on the package is as follows:Safflower seed, white proso millet, buckwheat, cracked corn, paddy rice, oat groats, canary grass seed, sunflower chips, black oil sunflower, peanuts, orange oat groats (FD&C Orange #6), hemp seed, kibbled corn, cantaloupe seed, carrot dices, dehydrated green peas, red bell pepper dices, peppers, spinach flakes, soybean oil, orange oil (used as a preservative).The product has a few drawbacks, such as no indication of where the ingredients originate or whether the ingredients were farmed organically and responsibly. The product, like fresh foods, should be organic as it is extra healthful for the body systems of birds. It would be beneficial to reduce the size of the peanuts and further reduce the cracked corn as most parrotlets are unwilling to break these foods into smaller pieces and oftentimes are unable to do so.

My parrotlet is picky about other seeds but he loves this – every bag I have ever bought has been fresh and high quality. I love that this is formulate FOR PARROTLETS – that’s hard to find! I mix it with his pellets.
